Executive Function

In person in Central LA // On Zoom everywhere

For more than six years I’ve reduced stress and cultivated joy for high school and college students.

Why I do this

Young people want to learn. They relish the opportunity to learn. But navigating academic institutions is another matter — one that can cloud the educational experience. My job is to stand between the curious, complicated young mind and the institution. I am guided by the core belief that different types of intelligence exist. Whether or not a student speaks the language of the school, I aim to sharpen both their mind and their formal ability to apply it. As a result, their internal, intellectual life becomes richer; and externally they become better at communicating with teachers and engaging in work.

In the age of the smartphone, it is critical to be able to do this face-to-face, over the unbroken duration of a session and across the months of our partnership.

My Approach

Structure

My work is about creating processes. Each student arrives with some kind of academic aim, or at least a hunch, but with uncertainty about which road will best lead them to it. Whether I’m coaching a high school freshman or an adult Fulbright applicant, I help illuminate the steps that will take them to their destination. For test prep, this means pinpointing areas needing work and clarifying a weekly routine. On an essay, it means formulating a compelling argument and establishing steps towards communicating it. Solidifying a plan, I am able to keep students on top of their tasks.

Emphasis on the individual

If I’ve learned anything in this work, it’s that students possess radically different ways of learning. Sometimes their intellect and inspiration is right on the surface; other times it’s buried deep. In the effort to access their voice and motivation, I keep judgment entirely out of my practice. I also incorporate mindfulness exercises that calm the nerves and awaken an active mind. The authentic individual is the point from which our work must begin.

I excel at working with students with ADD/ADHD, as well as with artists of all kinds.

Testimonials

“By the time I got to ACT exam day I felt confident and thoroughly prepared, and my score of 34 certainly reflected that! Paul helped me build my test-taking stamina and familiarity with the material. Our sessions were not only productive but always enjoyable, and I learned strategies that improved both my accuracy and speed.”

Maggie, Sierra Canyon class of 2025

“During my time with Paul, writing evolved from a daunting and unfortunate task that I dreaded to a puzzle that I was excited to dissect. He makes his goals unique to the student. He understood what I needed help with, and we would spend time diving into that area of weakness in order to make me feel as confident as possible.”

Thea, Washington University class of 2026
